I've managed to get through a bunch more DVDs and clearing out my TO WATCH shelves. Unfortunately (or fortunately), abda keeps me stocked of more and more and more great films. CRYING FIST, A BITTERSWEET LIFE, GREEN CHAIR are the latest new releases there. Anyway, here are my latest watchings:
THE LAST PRESENT
Surprisingly effective romantic melodrama with echoes of THE GIFT OF THE MAGI. He's a struggling comedian and she owns a children's clothing shop and their marriage is on the rocks. They're not on speaking terms anymore and what communication does come out is gruff. But she's terminally ill and before she dies, she wants to grant him his wish of being a successful comedian. He finds out about her illness (unbeknownst to her) and wants to grant her her wish of seeing her childhood, lifelong love. Highly effective performances enhance the dramatic irony as both principals clearly love each other but have lost the capacity to communicate it. Some wonderful comedic moments, especially by the two conmen cum PIs. No surprises, but well executed and very satisfying.
HOW TO KEEP MY LOVE
Mediocre RomCom which echoes NOTTING HILL slightly. He's a handsome pest control guy. His girlfriend is an insecure, somewhat crazed, "normal" girl. She's the gorgeous, movie superstarlet who falls for him. Now the girlfriend tries to keep him by any and all means. Some funny moments, but are generally undone by the awful characterization (and performance) of the lead girl. The supporting actors are generally very good and are suitably wacky, but there's not much real humor or real romance to make this very watchable. It's nice to see The Bestfriend in PHOENIX (k-Drama) in a movie (i have no idea what the actress' name is!).
MAPADO (MAPA ISLAND)
Really odd movie that plays as part comedy and part drama; has the makings of a fairly strong movie in either genre, but never seems to really feel at ease with itself. A former gangster is on the straight-and-narrow (apparently) and sends a girl to go buy a LOTTO ticket with "my normal numbers." As he waits for her to return, the numbers are announced. Yes, he's won and the jackpot is $18M. But the only problem is that she never comes back. So, he hires a crooked detective and sends one of his own men to go with him to find her and get the money back. They end up at MAPA Island, which is a rural island populated exclusively by middle-aged women, and try to blend in until the girl shows up. Some humorous moments, but suffers because ostensibly the sympathetic character (the girl) is the criminal. The "bad guy" only wants to retrive what she stole from him. It's difficult to reconcile this reasonably in the context of the movie.
A PUBLIC ENEMY
A really sizzling, energetic cop drama that stars one of my favorite korean actors, Sol Kyung-gu (from RIKIDOZAN, SILIMDO, OASIS, PEPPERMINT CANDY). He's a cop who doesn't go by the book, in fact he's so far gone he has no idea there IS a book! There's a double murder case and he's on it, although he's seemingly screwing things up more than solving it. Powerful performances all around, interesting plot, electric cinematography. It's a must-see.
WHITE VALENTINE
Being a Jeon Ji-hyun fan (*swooN*), after seeing MY SASSY GIRL, WINDSTRUCK, and IL MARE, I sought out her other major movie. Unfortunately, this was not even remotely up to the previous standards. WHITE VALENTINE is a by-the-numbers romantic drama that plays out as more a tedious exercise is emotional manipulation than a decent movie, which means that it's a mediocre romDram. He's a petshop owner whose girlfriend has died. She's a girl who writes letter to strangers and wants to fall in love. They meet (and correspond) via his messenger pigeon. You can imagine the rest...
A BITTERSWEET LIFE
Stark, electric, dynamic, powerful mob drama film starring Lee Byung-hun (JSA, EVERYBODY HAS SECRETS). He's the Mob Boss's loyal right hand man but because of circumstances, is now on the run from the Boss. Unfortunately, it's gone farther than that and he's now targetted by the OTHER Mob Boss as well and, for good measure, some gun-runners, too. The story evolves and unfolds beautifully and inexorably. The performances are excellent, being mostly stoic facades with emotions within. What is most amazing about this movie is that it ventures into familair scenarios, but (for the most part) deals with them in fresh and anti-cliche fashions, some to the point of making you think, "Brilliant!" There's a battle sequence that's as excellent the Hallway Sequence in OLDBOY, but (imo) more emotionally charged.
The only negatives are a few inconsistently unbelievable moments near the end. As much of the movie was starkly rooted in reality, some of the over-the-top moments felt awkward, but overall, absolutely excellent.
